Lemur Love is a charity that I find incredibly admirable. The many different species of Lemurs living on Madagascar are THE most endangered vertebrates on the planet. Scientists estimate that they may be extinct from the wild in as soon as 25 years.
Lemur Love works with the women of Madagascar in tandem with scientists conduction long-term research, to develop ways to help the Lemur population bounce back and preserving the resources the Lemurs need to flourish.
In many parts of the developing world, women play critical roles in managing natural resources, yet are often excluded from the community-level decisions regarding the resources. In rural Madagascar, women are often responsible for gathering resources like wood, water, and agricultural products, which means they have a unique understanding of these resources, and are disproportionately impacted by changes in the availability of the items. Including women in decision making thus ensures greater success and sustainability of projects aimed at conserving nature and biodiversity.
Through their work with the local women of Madagascar and their long-term research of the Lemur habitats and the effects of legal and illegal lemur trade, they are working to preserve the incredible 101 species of lemurs that call Madagascar home.
