Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, March 15, 1933 – September 18, 2020.
Supreme Court Justice.
Feminist Icon.
Queen of Dissent.
Her-Story Maker.

Ginsburg graduated top of her class from Cornell University and married her husband shortly after. She took a short break from schooling to start a family, and upon her husband’s return from military service, she enrolled in Harvard Law where she was one of nine females in a 500-person class. She maintained top of her class in law school despite her husband being diagnosed with cancer her first year. She faced many other challenges including gender discrimination, but nothing could stop her.

Ginsburg served as the first female member of the Harvard Law Review and upon transferring to complete law school at Columbia Law, she served on their law review as well. She graduated first in her class from Columbia Law in 1959. In the early stages of her career, Ginsburg found herself to be surrounded by the trials of gender inequality. She was under-paid in several positions she held as compared to her male counterparts and while she was a professor at Rutgers University, she lied about her pregnancy to prevent further discrimination. Ginsburg went on to become the first female professor to earn tenure with Columbia university. During the 1970s, Ginsburg directed the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union and led the fight against gender discrimination. In 1978, She fought to successfully pass the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, establishing pregnancy discrimination in the workplace as unlawful. She successfully argued six landmark cases before the U.S. Supreme Court prior to being appointed by Jimmy Carter to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 1980. Ginsburg served on the court for thirteen years until Bill Clinton appointed her to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1993. She was the second female, and the first Jewish female Justice of the Supreme Court. Ginsburg was rated as “well qualified” by the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, its highest possible rating for a prospective justice.

In her time as Supreme Court Justice, Ginsburg made many strides for women’s rights and did so at a steady, calculated pace. Known for her firm ability to provide pointed guidance when necessary, she dissented in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. when the plaintiff, a female worker who was paid significantly less than her male colleagues holding the same qualifications, sued under Title VII but was denied relief under a statute of limitations issue. She called for congress to undo this improper interpretation of the law in her dissent and went on to work with President Barack Obama to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, the first piece of legislation he signed.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg spent 27 years on the bench. She was known for her dissenting opinions, championing progressive causes, and her wide array of collars adorning her traditional black robe. Among her collection, you’ll find the notorious black bib necklace with rhinestones by Banana Republic, a collar “fit for dissent.”

Our RBG Her-Story dress is a nod to all the advances Ginsburg made for women’s equality. She has paved a path for the little girls we are raising to have a fair shot at their own bright futures and her fearlessness in making these great strides will surely encourage your brave little Dove to maintain her never-back-down attitude with the graceful slow and steady approach she was known for.

To honor Ginsburg we have chosen a simple black twirl with ¾ sleeves (long sleeve optional) to mirror the appearance of the traditional black robes worn by Supreme Court justices. Affixed to the neckline is a beautiful off-white vintage crochet lace collar meant to portray a striking similarity to Ginsburg’s favorite – a white crochet collar she acquired in Cape Town, South Africa.
