Ruby Bridges was only six years old when she desegregated the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in 1960. She was escorted to school and guarded in school every day for a year by US Marshalls, but her mother and father recognized that allowing Ruby to take this step forward for her education, meant allowing all African American children the chance to take the same step.
We are celebrating Ruby Bridges this month with our Ruby dress, made of a plaid that is meant to resemble the plaid on her school uniform and remind us of the interwoven nature of race relations in society. All of the proceeds from this dress will be going to The Black Student Fund. You can read more about their mission here. They are a DC based operation that provides services and financial aid to black children ages K-12. Their work helps to ensure that children of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds have equal footing on which to pursuit their education.
